Generating catalog images you can actually ship

Featured and gallery images from a text prompt - where it works, where it doesn't, and what to check before it hits the media library.

StoreSuite can generate a featured or gallery image from a description, preview it, regenerate it, and drop the result into the media library. The preview is held in a transient until you accept it, so nothing lands in your uploads folder by accident.

That is the mechanism. The more useful question is when to use it.

Where generated images earn their place

  • Backgrounds and scenes. You have a clean product shot and need it on a marble counter, on linen, in a kitchen.
  • Category and collection headers. Nothing has to be a faithful photograph of a specific SKU.
  • Placeholders during setup. A catalog you are still building looks broken with grey squares and fine with a plausible image.

Where it does not

Anything that has to be a truthful depiction of the item the customer receives. A generated image of “a navy wool sweater” is not a photograph of your navy wool sweater, and the difference shows up as returns.

This is a consumer-protection line in most markets, not a stylistic one. If the image would reasonably be read as a photo of the product, it needs to be a photo of the product.

Prompting notes

Describe the shot, not just the object: lighting, surface, angle, and framing do more work than adjectives about the product. overhead shot, soft daylight, matte white surface, generous negative space gets you a usable catalog image; nice product photo does not.

Ask for negative space if you plan to put text over the result - it is much cheaper than cropping later.

Before you accept

Check the aspect ratio against your theme’s expected image size, and give the image a real alt text once it is in the library. Generation doesn’t write alt text for you, and a catalog of images with empty alt attributes is an accessibility problem that compounds quietly.
